Oh man, I was on fire sketching yesterday, I wish I could draw that much every day. The gryphons are from saturday night, but everything else there is from yesterday. I've got this awesome little Moleskine that has boxes on it. The first half of the book has two larger boxes per page, and the second half has four smaller boxes (as you can see here)... So while I wish the box sizes were either uniform throughout the book or at least interspersed, somehow the fact that there's already something on the page makes it so much easier to draw on. So far I've mostly been going through the book back to front (which explains why the earlier page is on the right)... Had a rough start with it becouse I wasn't sure what the sketchbook wanted or even if it would work for me, but as soon as I started doodling my green cat in it, I fell in love. Green cat quickly evolved from just a green spotted cheshire cat; to a polydactyl, multi-limbed, snake-tailed, goat horned cheshire chimera. And oh man is that awesome.
The gryphons showed up after a bout of frustration saturday night, green Pitt brushpen. The adjoining page happened during our watercolor critique in media class yesterday- I had seen an illuminated manuscript illustration depicting the cloistered monks' beloved polydactyl cat as a saint, but what had caught my eye was the method they used for depicting his many toes- instead of the usual addition of toes onto the same hand or paw, they had drawn two paws fused together at the wrist. So I wanted to play with that idea. It definitely merits more experimentation, I think. The cat and snake heads on the next page were drawn during a class lecture later that night, I borrowed Paul's snake book for reference there, snakes are awesome, I need to draw them more often. After that class I found myself playing around with the shape of bird feet and how they might relate to human feet, and all of a sudden this maroon guy showed up. About that time kahlil wanted to hit the sack but I ended up sitting in bed drawing until about 2am. And it felt GOOD.
Thanks! It's been a while since I've done much sketching for myself outside of mindless doodles, and I'm really enjoying playing around with stuff like this now. I'll probably put up most of them if they keep looking like these. ^__^
